Sometimes They Have Thorns @ Fount, April 2016

The Sometimes We Have Thorns show at Fount London enters the final week, the show is open today, tomorrow and Wednesday, then it all comes down. Lat for the #43 related events that started with the 43 paintings back in January and last chance to partake in the £43 thing, it all ends on Wednesday. We’re open 11am until 6pm today and until the show closes on Wednesday. Thanks to everyone who’s been along so far (besides the Wall and Jones thing this is probably the last London show for quite a while)

Cultivate Presents: SEAN WORRALL – SOMETIMES THEY HAVE THORNS
The show will present a collection of the recent (ongoing) series of Sometimes They Have Thorns paintings that have been evolving during 2016. The series of paintings that started at the Reveal show and formed a big part of the #43 show that happened on the 43rd day of the year with that one day show on the street under a railway bridge and on sale at £43 each, the series that continued at the recent Debaser show over at BSMT Space and will continue once more with new work for this nine day solo show in the railway arch at Fount.

The gallery walls will be alive with thorny growth, leaves on canvas (although some see other things and talk of leafhearts and such), expect thorns, pruning of growth, gardening, painting on canvas, on found things and for the last time this year the canvas paintings will be on sale at no more than £43 each (these will once again also be smaller pieces painted on found recycled vinyl or pieces of reclaimed wood).

The show will evolve through the nine days with Sean working at the space (or outside the space) during the period.

And as is tradition now with Sean Worrall solo shows, there will be a guest wall of artists invited to take part and make use of one wall in the space (Cultivate is about getting art and artists out there, artists coming together and doing it ourselves) GUEST WALL ARTISTS Lynne Blackburn , Quiet British Accent, Rosso and This One

SEAN WORRALL is an East London based artist (and reluctant curator), Sean’s current body of work explores the notion of new layers, the reclaiming of those things that are left to decay, the idea that our cities will eventually be covered and lost in new layers. Lost in the short term as we use the city walls as a street art canvas, then as nature paints her own leaf shaped beauty over the top of it all and takes everything back Trillion Green, the Captain’s Table…

An Art Drop, left outside to be taken…

Sean’s paintings explore the taking back of old walls, the growing over, the freshness of new leaves, new marks, old surfaces, always growing, recycled, renewed . Newly weathered marks over old faded shapes, new layers, fresh leaves, sprayed paint, crumbling old stonework, some see leaves, some see other things,. New growth over old, new shoots, new paint over decayed colour, the marks of evolving street art on tired city walls, new paint over old canvas. Layer over layer, the covering up, the taking back of unloved surfaces, refreshing. Spaces reclaimed both by human hand and nature’s growth.

it really isn’t clear at this point how far this series of thorn pieces are going to go, it is clear that the found frames are  a very important part of the most recent pieces. it is clear that work on 2016 One Hundred Pieced Piece started yesterday with a view to the Brick Lane Art Car Boot fair. Once again a piece of work that will consist of one hundred parts, each part for sale at £1 at the Art Car Boot Fair on June 12th.

Gardening, fresh growth, more art drops, maximalism in a warehouse, Play, curating, organising, Organ-ising…

Busy times, always busy times, busier than ever..  Gardening growth and a touch of Friday morning tending to the leaves, fresh layers for the weekend and the warehouse and Play. This week it has mostly been about juggling artists, sorting out officialdom and curating things. Maximalism indeed…  No sleep till Brick Lane, no, that’s next weekend, this weekend it happens in Hackney, London Fields….   The big green canvas had a giant white exclamation mark, that was then though, the painting stayed in the corner and if things stick around here then things are going to grow on things, a painting is never ever finished, growth never stops, seeds are planted…   And somewhere in amongst it all the sixth One Hundred Pieced piece is taking shape ready for next week and the Brick Lane Art Car Boot Fair,
