Starless and bible black? Where do we start here? New website, new blog, new layers, knee-deep in cultivation and I don’t know, I always thought the art should do all the talking and words are just clutter, look at it and form your own opinions… Seems people think I’ve been neglecting my art website and thing that I should keep it all in much more up-to-date order so I can be stalked a little better. Okay, I promise to be a little better at keeping this new space in a little better order. All the old bits of art from the old website are here, not much from a rather productive 2011 and a so far rather creatively busy 2012 up in the portfolio of work yet, lots of new work to put up. The year has been very busy so far, notions of What Price Art and the ideas of a January Sale, can an art gallery have a “January sale”? A joint show called Pruning Shock with Alan Wilson, and the non-stop curating of shows down Vyner Street. The Current show is called Black, and that’s where I should be heading now, doors to open, floors to sweep, people
to talk to, running this gallery is eating up far more time than I expected it would; looking after the shows, keeping the opening hours, pulling together the next events… proving to be very very interesting though. We took it on as a six month project, see things from the gallery-person’s point of view rather than jsut constantly moaning about the way they treat artists, leaning more everyday, very interesting day yesterday, more light shined and such…
So we have a group show called Black on at the moment down at Cultivate. The idea of Black is simple, invite artists to interpret the title in any way they want, deliberately leave it vague, select the most interesting/stimulating/exciting and put on a rather diverse, rather busy show of art united in one room by the various forms of radiated blackness… and so we have a room alive with 29 artists and about 45 pieces of work and a show just about to enter a final weekend down at Cultivate, Vyner Street – which, as I just said, is where I must go now and put in another shift… Black has been very well received so far, very busy opening night and record daytime attendance numbers for the gallery last Saturday (it was a ragingly cold day, didn’t expect to see anyone, lots of people, healthy enthusiasm, interesting debate and indeed a couple of nice sales, always nice to sell some work)
So yes, new website, full of old art right now, we’ll tidy it up, chuck out some of the old, as you do once you move in to somewhere new and start to open the boxes of old junk you brought with you, then we’ll get some of the images of more recent work up and keep this website in a little more order…
Got to go open the Cultivate doors, more new website building over the weekend, this is all still under construction…
