Today was installation day over in the grounds of Stephen’s House over in Finchley, North London. A sculpture trail, although it seems like there’s far more installation than actual sculpture. An outdoor gathering of eleven artists invited by curator Rebekah Dean. A show called The Sky Is Moving Sideways, an outdoor exhibition at the rather historic listed building. The grounds are wonderful, the show officially opens tomorrow, Tuesday September 13th and runs until Sunday 18th September, with an opening night from 6.30pm until 8pm (performances at 7pm and 7.15pm) on Tuesday, more details via this Organ preview – The Sky is Moving Sideways, a sculpture trail, a gathering of ephemeral sculptures, installation set in the grounds of the rather rewarding Stephens House, Finchley, North London….

My piece, 43 Leaves Left was planted down by the pond full of excellent fish, the fish are the starts of the show. 43 leaves grown on found unwanted wood, material found once more on the street here in Hackney. Someone just said it looks like a cemetery, no one is right or wrong, that wasn’t may way of thinking though, I was playing with the idea that new life grows on the things (or maybe from the things) we waste, I was also kind of playing with idea of those plant labels we put in the ground so we know what we’re growing. It is all about about fresh growth, new layers, as well as the fact that nothing is permanent, that this really is an ephemeral piece of work and by the end of the week it will all have gone to seed and the pieces of found wood will probably be off to the landfill they were originally on their way to before I picked them up off the street and piled them into the studio. I guess most of the art I make will eventually end up in landfill…
