The still ongoing matter of skylines (and sealines), the space above buildings, the shape of buildings, piers, places, that point where the sea touches the sky (or the sky never quite touches the sea). An evolving series of pieces that started back in Margate three or four years ago, a series that will go on until the times comes to stop, a thread all of its own. Skylines, ways of looking, exploring. These three postcard sized pieces have been painted for an Art on a Postcard event that will happen on line and and at Towner Gallery in Eastbourne in September, more about that closer to the event.

While the postcards were being painted I did commit the pier to canvas, I do imagine I shall carry on exploring the pier a little more. The postcatds of the pier were by request, I had donated Skyline cards to Art on a Postcard before, this time they asked especially for a Skyline of the pier, I don’t always say yes to requests in terms of the Skylines, I have to feel something myself and yes, that victorian/Edwardian feel of the pier is a step away from the brutalism of most of the Skyline pieces but I do rather like that fact.
.
I have said this several times, I am very (very) picky about the Skylines I choose to paint, I probably spend far more time thinking about them and looking at the subjects than I do actually painting the subjects, i let some of the ideas run around my head for weeks, months, before I go back to them…
