War Pigs – Electric Painting No.40” (July 2025) – Acrylic on canvas, 20x20x1cm

A first electric cover painting for quite some time, the latest in a series of studies, fast cover interpretations painted in the time it takes to play the album in question very loudly just once. I wanted to revisit this subject on the day I did back in July. The album was called Paranoid, it was originally going to be called War Pigs until the single Paranoid became an unexpected hit and the label changed it without telling the band. Why paint it again when I had already painted it as part of the series? well it was the week that Ozzy Osbourne passed away, I had already painted an interpretation of the Black Sabbath album that originally cane out in 1970 as well (as two other Sabbath album covers) as part of the series of paintings and well someone asked and it was the right moment. I normally wouldn’t go back and repaint a cover I had already painted but this time is did seem right. I don’t really do requests either, although I will take suggestions, it does have to be an album I care about, it has to be music that matters to me and it has to be an album cover that interests me, I am being very picky about it

Actually I had forgotten how enjoyable the process of just putting on an album really loud and just going for it without having time to think about it or to stand back and contemplate the piece while the painting was in progress. I don’t usually paint like that – I do draw like that when I’m on a train or in a pub or on the street or at a gig – when I painting I do a lot of just looking at the painting, standing back from it, thinking about the work in progress. This particular album is just under 42 minutes long so there really isn’t time to stop and think when the painting has be finished in the time it takes to play the album just once (especially when the album is being played very very loudly). I should do it again…
