The ongoing notion of a smaller painting brought to a completed conclusion on every single day…

Daily Conclusion 423 (59/365/2018 – Feb 28th). On recycled cardboard

The notion of a smaller painting brought to a completed conclusion on every day started back on January 1st 2017, not a painting started and finished on the same day, just one of the many paintings that tend to be happening and evolving in the studio at all the same time brought to a completed conclusion (right now there’s around twenty half finished smaller paintings as well as several much larger ones here in the studio). The notion was originally to end on December 31st, somehow it didn’t, it was originally a year long challenge I set myself, I rather enjoyed the discipline of having to do it though, so until it stops being a positive thing and starts to become a burden then on the notion will go on. I need to draw or paint every day, a day is not complete until paint has touched canvas (or wood or vinyl or…).

Daily Conclusion 408 (44/365/2018 – Feb 13th). On a recycled piece of fridge

And I do rather like the mass-production pop art aspect of it all, I do like the idea of producing so much work that there’s very little monetary value in any of it, that a piece of art can be on sale for little more than you’d pay for a much-loved CD or a cake and cup of coffee or a couple of pints, I kind of like that people can enjoy buying a small piece of art without it being about money and the value and the big price ticket, I like that some of them can be left on the street for people to take or that the pieces can be on sale (of course paint costs money and bills need to be paid so if you do see a piece you like and it isn’t in the shop, then do please ask, I may still have it here in the studio).  Today I am mostly working on a big canvas piece that will hopefully be part of a solo show of larger work later this year….

The notion of a small painting brought to a completed conclusion was the challenge for 2017, it was completed last night as the year came to a quiet end…

The final concluded painting of 2017, the 365th of the year, the piece was completed just before the chimes of midnight last night. The question is, will the notion continue in 2018?

Daily Painting 365/365 (31st December,2017) – Fresh growth, new layers, leaves and the ongoing notion of a smaller painting brought to a completed conclusion on every single day of 2017. Acrylic, brushwork, spray paint, gloss varnish on a found piece of hardboard, 38cm x 82cm

The notion of a small painting brought to a completed conclusion was the challenge for 2017, it was completed last night as the year came to a quiet end, some of the pieces have been more successful than others, some have pleased, some maybe not quite so much, should the challenge carry on?  Maybe, watch this space, it was a rather enjoyable challenge, and the making of art, as difficult and challenging as it can sometimes be, should be enjoyable…  Here’s are the last daily paintings of 2017…

The question is, will this all stop at the end of 2017?

Daily Painting 335/365 (1st December,2017) – Fresh growth, new layers, leaves and the ongoing notion of a smaller painting brought to a completed conclusion on every single day of 2017. Acrylic, brushwork, spray paint, gloss varnish on recycled cardboard, 21cm x 21cm

Fresh growth, new layers, leaves and the ongoing notion of a smaller painting brought to a completed conclusion on every single day of 2017. The most recent pieces are  acrylic pieces, a combination of brushwork, spray paint and that vital layer of gloss varnish on recycled cardboard, 21cm x 21cm. yesterday’s concluded piece is yet to be photographed, day 345, twenty more pieces need to be concluded this year, I rather like the evolution that has been revealed since January 1st as each piece is concluded, view them all here, the question is, will this all stop at the end of 2017? I rather like the challenge of concluding a piece every day (these are not pieces that are started on the same day as they are concluded). The best place to follow all this (should you want to) is via the Instagram feed. “Will they all be exhibited at the end of the year?” asked someone a few days back, no, many of them have already been sold or”dropped” on the street, some are for sale via the Cultivate shop, some of the more recent ones will be part of the Intent show that opens at BSMT Space in Dalston (London) on January 18th but no, the pieces are scattered all over the globe now. Incidentally if you are after a particular piece and can’t see it in the shop, please do ask, it might have already found a home, it might still be here.

There really is no satisfaction to be found in a day that doesn’t involve some kind of drawing or painting….

Daily Painting 258/365 (15th September,2017) – Fresh growth, new layers, leaves and the ongoing notion of a smaller painting brought to a completed conclusion on every single day of 2017. On day 258, a 258th piece, acrylic, brushwork, marker pen, gloss varnish on a found recycled piece of hardboard, 43cm x 43cm

The ongoing notion of a smaller painting brought to a completed conclusion on every single day of 2017. A notion that started on the very first day of January, not a painting started and finished every single day, more a painting brought to a completed conclusion every day. There are several smaller pieces being painted on any given day alongside the bigger paintings that are constantly being worked on

Work in progress, September 2017

There are always pieces in progress and paintings in need of being brought to a conclusion and there really is no satisfaction to be found in a day that doesn’t involve some kind of drawing or painting….
